A Biographical Sketch of Lawrence Peterson |

|
Lawrence Peterson was born with ink in his blood. His grandfather on his father’s side was the publisher of the first newspaper west of the Mississippi. His great grandparents on his maternal side were publishers of educational text books in the pre-Civil War south. It seemed only natural that he began his career in publishing in 1971 while in school at Berkeley. Part time work as pressman, typographer, and book designer helped pay his way through school during the turbulent early 70’s. He continued to pursue publishing as a career path. Lawrence opened his first studio in Palo Alto, California and was a pioneer in providing full service textbook design and production service as an independent studio. He was at the forefront of design and production for Universities and scholastic publications, El-High, College Schoolbooks, and Industry texts on computer programming and programming languages. During the mid eighties his talents turned to the new high end computer graphics stations and the Dicomed imaging system. Commercial applications of this emerging technology were in their infancy. Lawrence’s manipulations of the software, and innovative design techniques, won him national awards for design for Apple Computer, National Semiconductor and others. This line of endeavor brought him to Orlando in 1984, where he continued to achieve award-winning presentations. With the advent of the desktop environment Mr. Peterson once again found himself at the edge of technology by opening a consulting business for the installation of desktop publishing systems. He developed networked, reliable, high efficiency pre-press systems for newspapers, publishers and advertising agencies in the Orlando area. Lawrence continued to manage fine art, university and educational text book design. As digital photography entered the pre-press arena Mr. Peterson was once again involved in the first working installation of a digital photography workflow for Eckerd drugstores. His accumulated knowledge in all areas led him to move to St. Louis for two years to establish a typesetting, digital workflow and data asset management system for a major pre-press house. Upon leaving St. Louis (having had no significant vacation for many years) he took six months off to make a circumnavigation of the globe. On returning to the United States he settled in Orlando and of established a design and production studio there. While in Orlando he also assumed management of a succesful "turn-around" of a large typesetting and production facility. He found the Orlando community a vital business community and enjoyed the environment there for another seven years. Mr. Peterson then "freelanced" again in San Francisco for three years, before settling in Reno, Nevada. Lawrence has served the publishing and graphics community in many capacities, as shown on this web site. He continues to keep current with new technologies and now works from his home in Nevada. Lawrence sings Tenor, is active in environmental protection, works with various organizations on protection of Nevada's Family Farms, actively works to improve his German and travels to Europe as often as possible.
